What to Evaluate in Pittsburgh

CHC Southwest Zone expertise.  Pittsburgh’s CHC zone has different MCOs than Philadelphia.  The agency you choose must work with the Southwest Zone MCOs: AmeriHealth Caritas, PA Health & Wellness, and UPMC CHC. If they don’t, they can’t serve your family through Medicaid.

PDS and AWC capability.  If your family wants a relative to be the paid caregiver, the agency must support Participant-Directed Services and Agency with Choice. Ask directly.

UPMC integration.  If your loved one’s medical care is through UPMC providers, an agency that works within the UPMC CHC network may provide better care coordination. If your loved one is enrolled in a different MCO, this is less relevant.

Allegheny County knowledge.  Does the agency know the Allegheny County AAA system, the local MDHHS resources, and the neighborhood-level realities of providing care in Pittsburgh’s hillside terrain and aging housing stock?

Responsiveness and onboarding speed.  Same as Philadelphia — call them, test them, ask about timelines.
